New Zealand reports case of drug-resistant superbug

Health officials in New Zealand have identified a case of Candida auris, a drug-resistant superbug that can cause invasive yeast infections and kills about one-third of infected patients. The fungus is particularly dangerous for people with weak immune systems, such as the elderly and young children, and spreads through close contact. Symptoms include persistent fever and chills, and normal anti-fungal medication is ineffective against the infection. While the infected person in New Zealand contracted the illness overseas, experts warn that the risk of drug-resistant illnesses is growing and efforts must be made to improve infection control and cleaning in hospitals and care facilities.
